About the workshop

Over the last years, social media have permeated organizations, having yet unknown impacts on social relationships and cooperative work in distributed organizations. The “Enterprise 2.0 phenomenon” has been given considerable attention by both scholars and practitioners, resulting in a significant body of research on how social software is used in corporate environments. But the research examining this impact is still in its infancy, and CSCW as a field has not yet systematically enough approached the study of social media use within organisations. The intent of this workshop is to bring together a wide variety of researchers and practitioners who have experience from within “socially media active” organisations, or have access and study social media use in organisations, to share information on what is known and to forge a research approach that draws on CSCW concepts and reflects the CSCW perspective.


We want to…
…bring together researchers and practitioners who are focusing on, or are interested in exploring, the uses of social media in the work place
…create a community interested in studying social media from a CSCW perspective
…discuss the state-of-the-art, emerging themes, and opportunities for future collaboration.


  • Changes in the character of work enabled by social media
  • The impact and implications of social media on providing computer support for cooperative work
  • Identifying new use cases of social media (especially about situations that have not been supported by groupware before)
  • The new dimensions added by social media to groupware
  • CSCW concepts applied to the study of social media uses in corporate environments (e.g. awareness, coordination, place and space, common information spaces, etc)
  • The adaptation of existing methods for studying CSCW in the context of social media (virtual ethnography, mining digital repositories etc)

Call for participation

Potential workshop participants are invited to submit 2-4 page position papers (Author kits and paper templates are available on the ECSCW website). Using concrete case studies, the papers should focus on the relationship between social media and CSCW, and aim to identify new research questions in relation with this. A short biography should be included for each author at the end of the paper.

The workshop will take place as a full day session, with a maximum of 14 to 18 participants selected on the basis of submitted position papers.

Workshop outline
The workshop will be structured in two parts:

  • The morning session will include a short introduction by workshop organisers, individual introductions, including research interests and social media involvement, and short paper presentations in form of position statements.
  • The afternoon session will be dedicated to an Open Space-style discussion.
