The 9th European, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Conference on Information Systems (EMCIS), is held in Munich this year. Special Issue „Enterprise 2.0 / Social Computing in Corporations“

With the Web 2.0 we have seen broad participation coming to the Internet. The Web evolved from a platform where only few people publish for a large number of readers to a platform where everybody can contribute.

Increasing participation and engagement is also an issue in corporations – particularly in the field of knowledge management. In addition to making a larger body of knowledge available, providing means to participate and thereby to be visible in the corporation can also help to improve the motivation of employees.

Since supporting participation and visibility in the corporation is closely related to supporting social interaction, the term Social Software was coined for the corresponding support software. Under the umbrella of the terms Social Computing (in Corporations) or Enterprise 2.0 science and industry are currently experimenting with the use of Social Software in organizations – to support participation of employees and make knowledge available when needed.

In this special issue we want to present the current state of the discussion and research on this topic (Enterprise 2.0) in selected contributions.

Topics may include, but are not limited to the following:

• technological trends
• new applications
• technopolitical aspects
• sociotechnical design parameters
• evaluation, success factors
• questions of standardization

Spurred by their success in the public space, social media platforms, such as wikis, social networking services or micro-blogging are making fast inroads to the corporate space. Many businesses are experimenting with these new technologies for facilitating communication, teamwork, and knowledge exchange. However, the open nature of these platforms, their flexibility, ready availability on the Internet and the often bottom up nature of systems adoption raise an abundance of novel research management questions. Yet little is known about organisational impact, managerial challenges of corporate social media, let alone effective management practices for guiding social media adoption and use.

The term Enterprise 2.0 has been coined to denote a shift many proponents see in the organisation of inter-personal exchanges and information management, which take place inside corporations, mirroring the changes towards Web 2.0 in the public space. We invite contributions, which investigate all issues related to Enterprise 2.0 and the application of social media in the corporate space. Since the application of corporate social media is a cross-functional topic, that cuts across and impacts upon a range of significant business management areas, we encourage holistic, innovative research approaches, that will help to understand both unique opportunities arising from social media, as well as limitations and unexpected impacts. In particular, we are interested in papers, that take a critical perspective on oftentimes uncritical propositions of technology-induced change voiced by many promoters of social media in popular media and academia alike. We especially encourage studies, that provide a rich, socio-material understanding of social media in organisations (e.g. organisational anthropology or ethnographic studies).

We invite rigorous and relevant studies employing a wide variety of methods. Behavioural (qualitative and quantitative) studies as well as design-oriented research and conceptual papers on theory development will all be considered.

Topics include (but are not limited to):
Implementation, use and impact of various social media such as wikis, blogs, micro-blogs, social networking services, social tagging;
Emerging communication practices in social media platforms;
Leadership and team management in corporate social media spaces;
Implications of social media for information (resource) management and knowledge management practice;
Implications of social media for human resource management practice;
Implications of social media as (semi-)public, enterprise-wide spaces;
Implications for policy-making and IT governance;
Measurement of social media benefits (e.g. engagement, productivity, ROI);

About the workshop

Over the last years, social media have permeated organizations, having yet unknown impacts on social relationships and cooperative work in distributed organizations. The “Enterprise 2.0 phenomenon” has been given considerable attention by both scholars and practitioners, resulting in a significant body of research on how social software is used in corporate environments. But the research examining this impact is still in its infancy, and CSCW as a field has not yet systematically enough approached the study of social media use within organisations. The intent of this workshop is to bring together a wide variety of researchers and practitioners who have experience from within “socially media active” organisations, or have access and study social media use in organisations, to share information on what is known and to forge a research approach that draws on CSCW concepts and reflects the CSCW perspective.

Purpose

We want to…
…bring together researchers and practitioners who are focusing on, or are interested in exploring, the uses of social media in the work place
…create a community interested in studying social media from a CSCW perspective
…discuss the state-of-the-art, emerging themes, and opportunities for future collaboration.

Themes

• Changes in the character of work enabled by social media
• The impact and implications of social media on providing computer support for cooperative work
• Identifying new use cases of social media (especially about situations that have not been supported by groupware before)
• The new dimensions added by social media to groupware
• CSCW concepts applied to the study of social media uses in corporate environments (e.g. awareness, coordination, place and space, common information spaces, etc)
• The adaptation of existing methods for studying CSCW in the context of social media (virtual ethnography, mining digital repositories etc)

Call for participation

Potential workshop participants are invited to submit 2-4 page position papers (Author kits and paper templates are available on the ECSCW website). Using concrete case studies, the papers should focus on the relationship between social media and CSCW, and aim to identify new research questions in relation with this. A short biography should be included for each author at the end of the paper.

The workshop will take place as a full day session, with a maximum of 14 to 18 participants selected on the basis of submitted position papers.

Durch die Globalisierung von Unternehmen und das Aufbrechen der Wertschöpfungskette in immer mehr Branchen gewinnt die verteilte Zusammenarbeit weiter an Bedeutung. Eine solche Zusammenarbeit ist nur über elektronische Medien bewältigbar. Organisationen führen deshalb zunehmend weitere Kooperationsmedien ein. Das Spektrum reicht von Klassikern (z.B. Videokonfernzsystemen) über schwergewichtigen Anwendungen wie kooperativen Produktentwicklungssystemen hin zu neuen leichtgewichtigen Lösungen wie Social Software. Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Bereichen der IT beobachten wir dabei das spannende Phänomen, dass viele erfolgreiche Systeme aus dem Privatbereich in die Unternehmen gelangen (und nicht umgekehrt).

Der Track ‚Kooperationssysteme’ beschäftigt sich mit der Unterstützung kooperativer Arbeit vermittelt durch I&K-Technologien. Das Paradigma der Unterstützung menschlicher Arbeit setzt ein hinreichendes Verständnis von kooperativer Arbeitspraxis voraus, um diese dann durch Entwicklung und Anwendung von I&K-Technologien produktiver, flexibler, ökologischer oder humaner werden zu lassen. Für die sich dabei manifestierenden Veränderungen der Arbeits- und Lebenswelten müssen in integrierter Weise organisatorische, qualifikatorische und technische Konzepte entwickelt werden. Der Terminus ‚Kooperationssysteme’ ist also im sozio-technischen Sinne zu verstehen.

Ziel des Tracks ist es, die verschiedenen Facetten der Veränderung des traditionellen Arbeitens in Organisationen und der technologischen Unterstützung dieser Veränderung zu thematisieren und dazu interessierte Forscher-, Entwickler- und Anwendergruppen zusammenzubringen. Es sollen dabei sowohl Formen neuer Arbeit als auch neue Technologien und deren Unterstützungspotentiale thematisiert werden.

Einreichungen können sich mit folgenden Schwerpunkten des Tracks beschäftigen, sind aber nicht darauf beschränkt:

Einreichungen sind in deutscher oder in englischer Sprache möglich. Die Beiträge werden einem Peer-Reviewing unterzogen. Es müssen bisher unveröffentlichte Originalbeiträge sein, die auch in keiner anderen Konferenz oder Zeitschrift gleichzeitig im Begutachtungsprozess sind.

Zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen und daraus entstehende soziale Netze sind eine wichtige Stütze gesellschaftlicher und technischer Entwicklungen. Die Konzepte des Web 2.0 bieten neue digitale Unterstützung zur Entwicklung partizipativer sozialer Netze. Social Software und Social Media ermöglichen als Kooperationssysteme neue Formen der Zusammenarbeit. Die ökonomische Entwicklung sozialer Portale macht den Bedarf deutlich, offenbart aber auch die Schwierigkeit einer ökonomischen Bewertung. Aus Sicht des Benutzers werden Fragen der Privatheit, des Datenschutzes und des Identitätsdiebstahls wichtig. Wer in mehreren Systemen angemeldet ist, wünscht sich Interoperabilität und Datenaustausch.

Neben rein technologischen Fragen werden auch Themen medialer Präsenz und soziologische Phänomene bedeutsam. Mit der flächendeckenden digitalen Verfügbarkeit menschlicher Kommunikationsakte auf Portalen entstehen neue Möglichkeiten der Analyse sozialer Netzwerke bis hin zur Vorhersage gesellschaftlicher Trends.

Spezifische Themenfelder: Der Workshop Digitale Soziale Netze soll als ganztägige Veranstaltung diese Diskussion aus theoretischer und praktischer Perspektive beleuchten. Speziell von Interesse sind dabei Beiträge zu den folgenden Themen:

Programmgestaltung: Die Beiträge sollen maximal 15 Seiten lang sein und in deutsch oder englisch bisher noch nicht veröffentlichte Forschungsergebnisse darstellen. Sie werden in einem gemeinsamen Proceedings-Band der GI Jahrestagung als Lecture Notes in Informatics (LNI) veröffentlicht. Erfahrungsberichte mit Neuigkeits- und Alleinstellungsmerkmalen sowie interdisziplinäre Beiträge sind willkommen. Ziel ist eine Mischung theoretischer und praktischer Arbeiten, denen jeweils ein Halbtag gewidmet werden soll. Alle Beiträge werden in anonymisierter Form von mindestens drei Mitgliedern des Programmkomitees begutachtet. Einreichungen aus dem Programmkomitee sind zulässig. Die Beiträge müssen im LNI-Format erstellt werden.

Auswahlkriterien sind insbesondere Originalität, Neuigkeit, Innovationsgehalt, Themenwahl und Präsentation der Ideen. Auch dieses Jahr wird es wieder den Future Network Best Paper Award, gestiftet von http://www.future-network.at/, geben.

CSCW 2012 will be held February 11-15, 2012, in Seattle, Washington, USA. The deadline for Papers & Notes submission is June 3; titles and abstracts of Papers & Notes must be submitted by May 27.

The early submission date of June 3 reflects a new review process, wherein authors of promising submissions will be given a month to revise their 10-page Papers and/or 4-page Notes to address concerns raised by reviewers and increase their potential for achieving the level of clear contribution required for a CSCW Paper or Note. We have instituted this process to promote greater diversity while maintaining the high level of quality expected of CSCW Papers and Notes. Only complete submissions will be reviewed, and not all submissions will be eligible for revision, but we hope that the opportunity for revision in some cases may help prospective authors from outside the traditional CSCW community to structure the presentation of their work in a format that is better aligned with CSCW standards.

Workshop Description

We are soliciting submissions for a workshop dedicated to research at the nexus of computer science, text analysis, and organization/ network science that jointly considers the following two types of data:
1) Information produced or processed by communities and
2) Additional behavioral trace data from these communities.

Motivation and Impact:

Work on the joint consideration of communities and content by researchers from multiple fields has developed into an important and upcoming specialization, and has lead to relevant application-oriented innovations. Advances in natural language processing enable the efficient assessment of large quantities of text data and the extraction of information about socio-technical systems from corpora. Meanwhile, advances in organization and network science facilitate the examination of not just the relations between social agents, but also the consideration of their knowledge, interests and opinions. Taken together, these advances allow us to take into account multiple types of human behavior – who individuals and groups interact with and what they communicate – for analysis. This approach allows us to move beyond the reduction of information to the fact, frequency or likelihood of links between agents. This approach can lead to a better and more comprehensive understanding of the interplay and co-evolution of communities and information.

Who should submit?

The overarching goal with this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners to present and discuss cutting edge work on computing with communities and content. We solicit innovative, interdisciplinary and high quality contributions that address algorithmic, methodological and empirical questions in a computationally rigorous fashion.

Besides academic research papers, we explicitly also invite:
- Contributions from the private sector, e.g. case studies from the field.
- Presentations of novel technologies that are freely available to researchers.

Topics of Interest:
We are looking for papers from a diverse set of computationally minded contributors on the following topics:
- Natural Language Processing, Computational Linguistics, Social Media Analysis, and Sentiment Analysis as it relates to analysis of data from interaction in communities.
- Algorithms, methods and empirical findings for analyzing information produced or processed in communities and graph data, e.g. e-learning systems, communication networks, and online collaboration systems.
- Empirical studies that use computational methods and tools to address substantial questions about communication and information use in communities.
- Bibliometrics and Scientometrics.

We solicit original papers which have not been published elsewhere.
Language: English.
Length: 3500 to 5000 words (5000 words are approximately 10 pages in LNI format).

Zwischenbetriebliche Integration als ein Modell der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Unternehmen steht heutzutage besonders unter dem Einfluss neuer Kommunikationsformen. So unterliegt beispielsweise die elektronische Kommunikation in natürlicher Weise dem Community-Gedanken. Durch den Einsatz von Interorganisationssystemen werden temporäre und strategische Beziehungen zwischen Unternehmen gebildet. Interorganisationssysteme bilden eine Technologiebasis, die neue Wertschöpfungsmodelle zwischen den beteiligten Unternehmen ermöglicht. Die zentrale Frage hierbei ist, wie neue Formen der Kommunikation und Zusammenarbeit – subsummiert unter dem Begriff des „Enterprise 2.0“ – diese Wertschöpfung signifikant unterstützen und weiterentwickeln können.

Zwischenbetriebliche Integration ist der Enabler für überbetriebliche Geschäftsprozesse. Der Einsatz hochintegrierter Interorganisationssysteme ermöglicht die Etablierung innovativer und umfassender Wertschöpfungsprozesse zwischen einer Vielzahl von beteiligten Unternehmen, Partnern und Kunden. Die Entwicklung zwischenbetrieblicher Integration von papierbasierten Verfahren über EDI-Lösungen hin zu komplexen Interorganisationssystemen sieht sich nun mit den Möglichkeiten der Technologien des Enterprise 2.0 konfrontiert. Der erfolgreiche innerbetriebliche Einsatz von Technologien wie Blogs, Wikis, digitale soziale Netzwerke oder Instant Messaging konnte bereits hinreichend gezeigt werden. Gestaltungsprinzipien des Enterprise 2.0, die auf unternehmensübergreifende Informationssysteme angewendet werden, stellen die Beteiligten vor neue Herausforderungen. Diese finden sich beispielsweise in der Anpassung von Organisationsstrukturen und Geschäftsprozessen Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt sich die Frage, wie Enterprise 2.0-Technologien die zwischenbetriebliche Wertschöpfung signifikant beeinflussen können, welche Erfolgsrezepte es für ihren Einsatz gibt und wie sich dies auf die beteiligten Akteure auswirkt.

Dieser Workshop richtet sich gleichermaßen an Wissenschaftler und Praktiker und soll eine Diskussion zwischen Theorie und Praxis ermöglichen. Zentrale Themenfelder sind hierbei:

Die Begutachtung der eingereichten Beiträge erfolgt doppelt-blind im Rahmen des Programmkommitees. Die Entscheidung über Annahme und Ablehnung der Beiträge wird durch die Workshopleitung basierend auf den Ergebnissen der jeweiligen Gutachter getroffen.
