Abstract:

While Enterprise Social Software (ESS) is increasingly being used for different application scenarios, evaluating its impact remains a challenge. The various views and interests make each evaluation an individual matter and lead to different requirements. Based on a comprehensive literature analysis in the field of IS and ESS, as well as an interview study with 31 ESS experts, we suggest a conceptual framework intended as decision support for the design of ESS evaluation. This sheds light on the various design options and ensures completeness and consistency. The framework builds the orientation and starting point, and is accompanied by six evaluation classes that represent typical application instantiations and can be understood as principles of implementation (referring to the design theory approach by Gregor and Jones). A first evaluation confirms that the framework can lead to a more efficient evaluation design and to increased effectiveness during the evaluation phase.
